What the result means
A useful preflight checks more than whether a camera turns on. Confirm framing, eye line, background distractions, light direction, selected microphone, and whether normal speech produces a healthy level without repeatedly hitting the red zone. Headphones prevent the test audio from feeding back into the microphone.
Formula or method
The microphone meter reads time-domain samples from the browser Web Audio API and converts their root-mean-square amplitude into a relative display. It is a setup indicator, not a calibrated sound-pressure meter.
Boundaries to remember
- Camera and microphone access requires HTTPS or localhost in modern browsers.
- The level meter is relative and cannot certify broadcast loudness or hardware health.
- Some browsers show generic device labels until permission has been granted.
Use the result
From calculation to a cleaner recording
Check the actual input device
After access starts, verify the device names. macOS can retain a different microphone or camera from the one selected in your recording app.
Speak at real recording distance
Use the same posture and volume as the take. Aim for a responsive level that leaves headroom instead of a meter pinned at its maximum.
Inspect the frame as a viewer
Place the camera near eye level, face a soft light, remove sensitive tabs or notifications, and leave room for the webcam bubble if it will overlay the screen.
Questions
Does this webcam test upload video or audio?
No. The page requests a browser media stream, displays it locally, and analyses microphone samples in the page. It does not contain recording or upload code.
Why does the browser ask for permission?
Web browsers require explicit permission before a page can access camera or microphone hardware. You can stop the stream with the button and revoke site permission in browser settings.
Why can I see video but no microphone movement?
Check that the correct microphone is selected in macOS and the browser, confirm the browser has microphone permission, and make sure no hardware mute switch is active.
How should I frame a webcam bubble?
Use head-and-shoulders framing, keep the lens near eye level, light your face from the front or side, and place the bubble away from controls you will demonstrate. Rekort lets you adjust webcam position and size.
Can Rekort record webcam, system audio, and microphone together?
Yes. Rekort's recording controls support an optional webcam overlay plus microphone and system audio while capturing a full screen, window, or selected area.
Put the answer into the recording.
Rekort records screen, webcam, system audio, and microphone on macOS, then adds auto-zoom, timeline corrections, backgrounds, and local MP4 or GIF export.
